Prices should have floated up to relieve the shortage and then come down. But if prices were held the same for two months, then I could see the problem persisting through today.

Too much red tape to get things done quickly. Maybe if it was still on the national new things would get better quicker

If the price would go up to reflect the shortage, then more oil companies would move more gas to the region. With prices set at the same level there is no incentive for companies to work these areas. Raise the prices for a short period and gas should come rapidly to the area. Then prices will settle out. Let free market work.

It would be wise to top off your tank before driving into the city. Also, I have heard that many gas station tanks were flooded with water and will have to be "dried" out before they can function again. That is tougher than meets the eye.

"sad that the US can't get power to these people any sooner. At least it's not weeks like w/ Katrina." ========================= It HAS been weeks.
By the way, hurricanes like Katrina, Rita and Ike were vastly more powerful than Sandy. Just imagine how bad it would be if anther Cat 3 storm hit as on did in 1938.

I appreciate the various elements contributing to the situation, but I can't understand why the stations that have fuel in their storage tanks haven't made a mad rush for generators to get the gas out. Surely with the crunch still on any cost to invest in a generator would be compensated for the increase in price they'd be able to levy based on competition and relative scarcity.

It's not as simple as you think. Lot of those stations are flooded. I mean flooded. Water in their gas tanks. Has to be dealt with and it takes time and time is something we don't allow in our instant gratification society. Everybody settle down.

That was really thoughtful of gasbuddy to put together a gas availability tracker for the victims of Sandy. Time to get fuel trucks headed east!

as long as gas stations are not required to have backup generators, we will see this again and again.

This is easy to solve for the future, and other hurricane prone areas should take note. Large gas stations, say with over 6 islands will be deemed "critical infrastructure" and willbe mandated to have onsite generators. Some of the expense can be offset with tax rebates/credits. Same with terminal distribution centers, these will aslo be mandated as critical infrastructure and will either need to have onsite generation or the ability to gravity load (ie: no power) 18 wheelers directly from storage tanks, as all you need is a 2" truck connetion from the tank to the truck.
These problems are not hard to overcome, it just needs a bit of thiking ahead, and the Gulf Coast should start planning now.

Gasoline situation in NYC shocking, still a problem and what can happen next? The federal government, NY, NYC and NJ knew this strong storm was coming. With tropical storms and hurricanes, the southern states have more experience with them then anybody else. Gain knowledge about what to look out for, what to have ready and what do by asking those states. This same thing will happen in this area again, just do not know when. The electrical power with come on, given enough time, but NYC and the surrounding areas is large and it will take time to get it back ON. Make Big Oil deliver more fuel to the affected areas (NYC, NJ, etc.) and stop selling it on the world market for higher profits. There is a real need for fuel now! This oil and fuel belongs to the US and NOT only for Big Oil! Everyone affected needs to realize that the government is there to assist you, not to make it all warm and fuzzy. Do what is required to make 'your' situation better. Just another cog in the wheel to bring down the US by whatever means available. This is the makings of a TV disaster movie starring 'BH0.'

Don't worry though. The Red Cross said that their efforts have been near flawless, so in reality, it's actually all good. These are just extreme situations no one wants to hear about.
