Gasoline situation in NYC shocking, still a problem

GasBuddy Blog -- Sandy is long gone. Many would have expected that any lingering gasoline availability issues that had been a problem to be long gone by now. Quite the opposite in fact. I traveled to New York City this week to assist where possible with local and federal officials who were seeking any assistance from our organization and what I saw was shocking.

Gasoline stations still had long lines, even today, as rationing takes hold. Perhaps most stunning, is that numbers we compiled today utilizing the data from our spotters is that three out of four gas stations in the NYC area remain without gasoline to sell. Just 24% of gas stations today in the five boroughs had gasoline available- well over a week after Sandy had dissipated. Truly stunning...

But if prices were held the same for two months, then I could see the problem persisting through today.

With prices set at the same level there is no incentive for companies to work these areas. Raise the prices for a short period and gas should come rapidly to the area. Then prices will settle out. Let free market work.

Also, I have heard that many gas station tanks were flooded with water and will have to be "dried" out before they can function again. That is tougher than meets the eye.

Surely with the crunch still on any cost to invest in a generator would be compensated for the increase in price they'd be able to levy based on competition and relative scarcity.

Lot of those stations are flooded. I mean flooded. Water in their gas tanks. Has to be dealt with and it takes time and time is something we don't allow in our instant gratification society. Large gas stations, say with over 6 islands will be deemed "critical infrastructure" and willbe mandated to have onsite generators. Some of the expense can be offset with tax rebates/credits. Same with terminal distribution centers, these will aslo be mandated as critical infrastructure and will either need to have onsite generation or the ability to gravity load (ie: no power) 18 wheelers directly from storage tanks, as all you need is a 2" truck connetion from the tank to the truck. These problems are not hard to overcome, it just needs a bit of thiking ahead, and the Gulf Coast should start planning now.

The federal government, NY, NYC and NJ knew this strong storm was coming. With tropical storms and hurricanes, the southern states have more experience with them then anybody else. Gain knowledge about what to look out for, what to have ready and what do by asking those states. This same thing will happen in this area again, just do not know when. The electrical power with come on, given enough time, but NYC and the surrounding areas is large and it will take time to get it back ON. Make Big Oil deliver more fuel to the affected areas (NYC, NJ, etc.) and stop selling it on the world market for higher profits. There is a real need for fuel now! This oil and fuel belongs to the US and NOT only for Big Oil! Everyone affected needs to realize that the government is there to assist you, not to make it all warm and fuzzy. Do what is required to make 'your' situation better. Just another cog in the wheel to bring down the US by whatever means available. This is the makings of a TV disaster movie starring 'BH0.'
