There is still the civil litigation which could see even higher amounts.

"Caused the worst U.S. offshore oil spill ever."
If they were thinking correctly instead of saying "ever" they would of said so far. All it takes is a family crisis, a bottle of booze, a distraught captain and we can have Valdez II running aground, except the ships and cargo are bigger. Who knows when the next rig will blow and they can't figure out how to cap it and it pumps even more into the ocean and onto the shore !!

Does this money go to draw down the debt Obama caused to get reelected? Consumers get any of this? Don't make me laugh any harder..... my stomach hurts too much. It will hit the politicians pockets way before any real person would ever see a penny

I do not support them But glad they are accepting responsibility. It is unfortunate that some lost their lives by carless actions of others!

Obscenely wealthy corporations like BP shouldn't be fined MONEY. That's silly, and won't change anything. There should be some other type of hugely damaging penalty other than money.

But will they actually take money from the senior executives. instead of just the company? Not a chance - they will probably get a bonus instead of jail time.

British Petroleum tried to cut too many corners on that one. The onsite engineer recommended X# of reinforcing cement supports for the pipe. Someone from above managed to talk him into "saving money" by not re-inforcing the pipe as he should have. Look at how the savings payed off. Boil it all down and you end up with a nasty little pile of GREED! This spill need not have happened except for some schmo's corporate greed.

They should have paid even more! Another fire on a rig today. Drilling rigs should not be allowed on the oceans.

My impression is they want to put as much blame as possible on the oil rig manager. He has responsibility no doubt but I'm convinced that BP executives let him know his first responsibility was to BP production, not to the safety of his crew. Those men on the rig were told to continue working when warning alarms were sounding. It's a downright shame.
