Black boxes in cars likely to become standard

Autoweek -- Most people are aware of event data recorders, commonly called “black boxes,” in airplanes. Many people don't realize a variety of passenger cars also have these devices -- and they may be mandatory for 2015 model year cars.

There are black boxes in about 96 percent of cars for the 2013 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. So having them in all cars isn't a big change, but along with that mandatory ruling will likely come some additional parameters for what data is collected and how it is shared. The details are what have civil-rights groups and some legislators concerned.

The use of black boxes in cars is not new. They've actually been in vehicles for more than 20 years as a way for automakers to access information about the car's movement ...

The National Motorists Association ) has had recent articles and discussions about who "owns" the data and there are many discussions that are inconclusive as of yet: the government, or the owner of the car, owns the data?

Black boxes in cars likely to become standard, those black boxes have been in vehicles for many years. The black boxes are recording whatever and don't expect it to get any better!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

This is nothing but Big Brother. Watch out for black boxes in homes next. They will be free of charge to the "less fortunate", paid for by additional surcharges/taxes on the "rich", so the politicos in DC can determine if your lifestyle is "extravagant", leading to an "extravagance tax".

The idiots in charge in DC are all about wealth distribution. That is, OUR wealth, not theirs!

This is not a good idea, I don't want the government or insurance companies looking at my every move. Way too intrusive.

Full disclosure as to what data can be collected and how that data can be used is an absolute MUST for these devices.

Old news, they have been in many since the early 2000's and the court often asks us to remove them from vehicles we towed and deliver them to the courts when the vehicle is involved in a fatal crash.

From the article: "Regardless of the data being collected, the information is typically considered to belong to the car owner or lessee, and, generally, the owner needs to give permission for its use, or there needs to be a warrant for the data to be released."

I agree with being able to analyze data to further improve the safety features/technology of a vehicle, but the release of data to third parties (insurance companies, law enforcement and others) must be absolutely clarified and regulated to protect the privacy of the individual.

“More NoBama craziness, part of his plan to make us a vassal state . . .”

Come on Wayoung, give it a rest. President Barack Obama won re-election by a significant margin. He is your president as well as mine and will be for the next 4 years. Now is the time to stop the childish, disparaging word games with his name and pay respect to the Office of the President, even if you do not like its current occupant. The time will come when someone you approve of will hold this office, at which time you will not appreciate this sort of trash talk.

When I first heard about event data recorders I had thoughts of Big Brother, similar to a lot of the comments here. This is what Road & Track said about them:

“An automotive EDR stores vehicle and occupant information in that brief period (seconds, not minutes) before, during and after airbag deployment. Think of a 15-second data spool being continuously monitored and—only in the event of a serious crash—being captured in memory, typically part of airbag-management electronics.

“The primary purpose of an EDR is to assess automotive safety hardware; specifically, to gauge the efficacy of airbags and their deployment strategies. Succinctly, if an airbag doesn't go off, the EDR has nothing to report.”

These statements make the concept a whole lot less scary IMO.

More NoBama craziness, part of his plan to make us a vassal state to the Muslim nations, I think he used Soviet mind control techniques to make Adam Lanza go on his killing spree to help him put new gun control laws in place.

Once he does that, the First Amendment will be thrown out and then the 22nd, then he will set himself up as a dictator...

Per knot2swift
"Still...After over 600,000 miles in my life time, I've gone past many an accident scene already seeing who did what wrong after witnessing many horrific accidents."

What does this mean

"Young idiot cops waste hours investigating tying the road up for hours. Meanwhile...My son in law who is almost a full fledged "Auto Body Man" would love the job. I'm sure he could wrap up the scene in half the time! "

Next time you need a policeman call your idiot son-in-law instead

Your nickname is appropriate

I'm all for the black boxes. They are especially helpful when it's not clear who is at fault in an accident.
