House gas tax backer admits his 'timing was unfortunate'

New Hampshire Union Leader -- The leading proponent of raising the state gas tax admitted Tuesday his "timing was unfortunate" when he referred to some of the proceeds as "the gift that keeps on giving."

Rep. David Campbell, D-Nashua, sent an email last Friday referencing money from the gas tax that will be used for the Fish and Game Department, the Department of Resources and Economic Development's trail fund and the state's general fund.

Critics suggested the statement showed that tax supporters wanted higher taxes for more than just highways and bridge work.

Former House speaker Bill O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, was quick to criticize Campbell for his remark, calling it contrary to Campbell's "public posture that 'every dollar' will be going to roads."

Fuel taxes are Not for the state's General Fund, Fish and Game Department or Department of Resources and Economic Development's trail fund OR any number of other funds they think should be funded from fuel taxes. No wonder there are many state's that want to raise fuel taxes because there is no money for roads and bridges. Get rid of the 'tards that can't manage the state's taxes and funds correctly. He should open his mouth and insert foot! Many state's and Big Oil and Big Gas know all about 'the gift that keeps on giving.' Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

One should have to defend the need for taxation whenever one "sees the need" to raise taxes (and note the quotes – Not that I don't think taxes should be raised, but one should be slow to raise taxes (only when needed) and ready to drop taxes whenever it makes good sense (to both the economy and to other people).
