Lawmakers working to replace Michigan's gas tax with a sales tax increase

Michigan Radio -- Voters may soon decide whether Michigan should scrap the 19-cents-per-gallon tax on gas at the pump in favor of a sales tax increase of 1 percent.

The change would help generate more money for transportation funding.

A proposal to put the question to voters is gaining momentum with some legislative leaders.

Gas taxes pay for roads and bridges. If you have a car, paying gas taxes pays for these services you use. It seems repulsive to make those without cars to pay for these services used by car owners.

Sure we help pay for it already with the current gas tax but those rates aren't enough. Back in 1997 the rates may have been adequate but they are not adequate now. Things cost more now then they did back in the 90's. Maybe the rates need be adjusted for inflation. Today's dollar isn't worth as much as yesterday's dollar. For those who say they don't use the roads, well they do indirectly. You more than likely depend on public transportation, you depend on the trucking industry to deliver goods to stores so you can buy them, etc...

Otherwise, what's to stop government from raiding the general fund/sales tax for whatever they want/not roads? AGAINST this. Mustang said it EXACTLY. If the 19 cents tax is dropped that would be 19 cents cheaper at the pump for gas. Then the state sales tax would increase 1%. The sales tax in MI is currently 6% so making it 7% isn't really a big deal. It's better than paying more at the pump, that's for sure!
