Rep. Mike Doyle: ‘I Don’t Believe there’s a Lick of U.S. or Canada Steel’ in Keystone XL Pipeline

ThinkProgress -- In hearings to mark up Republican legislation to expedite the Keystone XL pipeline, Rep. Mike Doyle accused TransCanada of misleading the American public that the pipeline would be built with American steel.

Doyle submitted an amendment that challenged TransCanada to certify its claim that 75 percent of the pipe comes from North America. Discussing his amendment, Doyle expressed his frustration in attempts to get a straight answer from the company about where the steel for the 1700-mile pipe was made. Doyle found that Indian company Welspun Corp appears to be the pipeline supplier.

Doyle revealed he found that 148 miles of pipe have already been constructed in India and shipped to Welspun’s subsidiary Welspun Tubular in Little Rock, AR.

The steel comes from the same Indian manufa

Is there any steel made in the US anymore? Over the last 30 years, US manufacturing has been gutted and sent to China.

Hopefully "Where's the Steel?" shall be an icon like "Where's the Beef?".

Wake up backwoods boys. How can you be so readily deceived by Big Oil and this horrendous scheme that just sends Alberta crude to the highest bidder in China or India?

How about a bridge in Brooklyn next?

Just wait until QuikTrip gets established there, and begins to spike your gas/diesel prices 20- to 30-cents per week.

Then we'll see how true you are to your political blindness.

Does it matter?

Apparently the parrot mouth-pieces below totally miss the point, or more likely they're simply ignoring it.

It isn't just about "where" the steel pipe came from.

It isn't just about "who" did or didn't manufacter the steel pipe.

It isn't just about philosophical differences on whether the pipeline should or shouldn't be built.

So, what is it about?

It's about being LIED TO.

It's about being DELIBERATELY DECEIVED.

If they'll so blatantly claim they will use American steel when they had no such intention; if they're so arrogant to believe that people wouldn't care if they find out - what trust have they earned for being truthful about ANYTHING ELSE that TransCanada, Harper, or Republicans have stated, claimed, pledged, or promised, in their concerted efforts to ram the project through?

Could it be that maybe they're afraid the Canadian citizens would not approve of "their" natural resources being sold-off, solely to the benefit only those few corporations involved? Could it be that the American citizens would not approved of basically being prostituted for "their" refining capacity while other promises are made with no intention of being kept, again solely to the benefit only those few corporations involved?

"The US doesn't make much steel anymore."

.

You obviously don't have a clue...

If the U.S. were to "compete" solely based on wages, it would make minimum wage and Welfare look good to 90% of Americans, when compared to what they'd be "allowed" to make.

The factory labor rate is less than 59-CENTS PER HOUR in China.

Don't have any figures on India, but I'm sure it's nothing to write home about:

China tops India on average pay

"Maybe American steel is too expensive. "

Too true.
Now how should the steel industry respond?
Just pout? DO something about it. Don't ask for a bailout or allow whining unions cuckhold you. Compete gagdangit. US was built on capitalism and competition. Pull ur socks and grow a pair.

The problem is that the regulatory agencies, such as OSHA and the EPA of the United States have made it prohibitive to manufacture in this country. Some of this is necessary but some are rediculous to the point of making companies to look offshore for their products that were previously manufactured here. Some of the union agreements that have been made have had a negative effect on the domestic manufacturing economy, also.

Why make it out of steel in the first place. Steel rusts out. With modern plastics, it should be a plastic pipe. One that won't rot out for over 500 years!
